My thoughts: gon is a complex shonen protagonist who is open about his feelings but due to that fact that we rarely see his inner monologue he remains enigmatic to the audience and most characters. He is often misinterpreted as unintelligent when he is in fact a very good problem solver with good intstincts. He deeply cares about those close to him and is willing to do anything for them, but he dislikes having them help him. This behavior comes off as both selfish and selfless. It may be due to a low sense of self worth caused by abandonment issues.
